Example letter

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Kitchen Porter vacancy at [employer]. My experience supporting a restaurant kitchen includes keeping washing-up areas organised and preparing clean equipment for service.

In my previous role, I washed pans and utensils, separated waste and followed the site's cleaning instructions. During busy periods I kept clean utensils available and told colleagues when equipment was damaged or needed attention.

Your advert describes a role supporting the kitchen team during service. I would bring practical experience of these support tasks and a willingness to learn your routines. I understand the importance of following hygiene instructions rather than rushing or using equipment without guidance.

Thank you for considering my application. I have attached my CV and would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my experience fits the role.

Kind regards,

[Your name]

Why these paragraphs are relevant

The evidence focuses on support during service rather than claiming chef experience. It connects ordinary tasks to the advertised role without inventing speed figures or food safety qualifications.

If you have no kitchen experience, replace the second paragraph with genuine transferable evidence from cleaning, teamwork or practical activities. Do not retain a restaurant job that you have never had.

Tailor before sending

Read the advert again and select the essential requirements you can support. If the employer provides a named contact, use that name and an appropriate sign-off. Include the actual vacancy reference if requested.

Research any statement about the employer using its own website or vacancy. Do not add an invented recommendation, unverified reputation or claimed company value. State availability only if it is accurate.

  • Replace every placeholder.
  • Keep dates and experience consistent with your CV.
  • Check the employer and job title.
  • Follow instructions for file type and where to submit.

Keep experience and qualifications separate

Improved wording should not change the facts. A letter is not evidence that you hold a certificate or licence. Confirm any mandatory requirement before claiming it, and be honest about training you would need.

This example does not represent a real applicant's result, testimonial or guarantee of an interview. Keep the final letter short enough to read comfortably and specific enough to explain why your evidence is relevant.
